The Standard Horizon HX400IS is a commercial-grade handheld VHF with an intrinsically safe design, intended for work around flammable vapors such as fuel docks, tankers, and engine spaces where an ordinary radio should not be used. It also carries Land Mobile Radio channels for crews that work on both marine and business frequencies.

Using a handheld well

  • Treat it as your backup or portable radio. A handheld transmits at a few watts from a short antenna, so range is usually a few miles. On boats with a helm, pair it with a fixed-mount VHF and a properly mounted antenna.
  • Charge before every trip and keep it on your body or in reach, not buried in a locker.
