Before You Buy
- Primary or backup? A serious cruising boat should still use a properly installed fixed-mount VHF and antenna as the primary radio.
- Will you configure DSC? GPS/DSC is valuable only if the radio is properly set up and you learn the distress procedure.
- Do you need AIS receive? If not, do not pay extra just to have it.
- Does it float? A floating radio makes sense for open cockpits, tenders, kayaks and small boats.
- Can you keep it charged? Battery management matters more than an impressive feature list on a dead radio.
