Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How does the built-in GPS compare to using my chartplotter's GPS?
A: The GX1410GW's built-in GPS provides position accuracy sufficient for DSC emergency calling (less than 10 meters). However, it's not a replacement for a navigation chartplotter. If you already have a chartplotter with GPS, the base GX1410W ($166.99) can receive position data from that device via NMEA, saving you $42. The GX1410GW is best for boats without any existing GPS.
Q: Will the GPS work if mounted inside my cabin?
A: GPS performance is significantly reduced when mounted in enclosed spaces, especially under metal structures. For reliable GPS reception, the GX1410GW should be mounted at the helm with exposure to the sky. If you must mount in an enclosed cabin, consider the base GX1410W with an external GPS antenna that can be mounted outside.
Q: Can I turn off the GPS and just use it as a regular VHF?
A: Yes, the GX1410GW functions perfectly as a standard VHF radio regardless of GPS status. If GPS satellites aren't acquired or you disable GPS, all voice communication features work normally. The only features requiring GPS are DSC position reporting and coordinate display.
