Your marine VHF radio is only as effective as the antenna system connected to it. Antenna height, gain, coax quality, mounting location, connectors, and corrosion can matter as much as the radio itself.

A broader vertical radiation pattern can make sense on sailboats and boats that heel, pitch, or roll significantly.
6 dB antennas
A flatter radiation pattern is commonly used on level powerboats where additional horizon-focused gain is useful.
The correct choice depends on vessel type, mounting height, and how the boat moves in real conditions. Gain alone does not guarantee better communication.
Antenna height is a major range factor
Marine VHF is primarily line-of-sight. Raising the antenna often improves practical range because it increases the radio horizon. Mount the antenna as high as practical while keeping the installation secure and serviceable.
Coax cable and connectors
- Use good-quality marine coax sized for the run length.
- Keep cable runs as short and direct as practical.
- Minimize unnecessary splices and adapters.
- Protect connectors from water intrusion and corrosion.
- Support cable so vibration and sharp edges do not damage it.
Installation checklist
- Use marine-rated mounting hardware.
- Seal deck penetrations appropriately.
- Keep coax out of standing bilge water.
- Use an adjustable or folding mount when trailering or bridge clearance requires it.
- Inspect the antenna and cable if range suddenly deteriorates.
- Perform a radio check after installation before relying on the system.
Common VHF antenna problems
Short range
Check antenna height, damaged coax, loose or corroded connectors, and water intrusion before blaming the radio.
High SWR or transmit warning
A damaged antenna, shorted coax, or poor termination can create an unsafe mismatch. Stop repeated transmitting until the antenna system is checked.
Corroded hardware
Inspect mounts and connectors regularly, especially after saltwater exposure.
Wrong mounting pattern
A high-gain antenna is not automatically ideal on a vessel that heels or rolls heavily.
