What range should I expect?
Over water, handheld VHF range is typically 1–5+ miles to another handheld and more to a tall shore or vessel antenna. Height and conditions matter more than watts.
Do I need a license?
In the U.S., recreational boaters usually do not need an individual license for VHF use within U.S. waters, but must follow FCC rules and monitor emergency channels.
